The Newest Yoga Craze, MRI Imaging Scam, Advice From the Better Business Bureau, & Termite Problems

It was an action-packed episode in our West Palm Beach studio at 850 WFTL this past weekend, complete with buggy questions, expert advice, and the possibility of exposing a MAJOR scam in the medical field.

Tom M. from imperial Point called in about a termite problem and asked whether Steve recommended spot treatments v. tenting the whole house. Tom's current "bug guy" quoted him $1400 just for his front door spot treatment. There were also two other listeners from Imperial Point who also asked for advice on dealing with termites. Steve, having experience with both options, always recommends tenting as the better way to rid termite infestations.

"Oftentimes, spot treatments don't even work." - Det. Steve

Even if you're paranoid about the chemicals affecting your food, pets, or family, there are certain precautions you can take and ultimately, tenting is a better value quality-wise and financially.

We also received an email from Jessica M. in Fort Lauderdale who complained that her doctor's office tried to trick her into doing an x-ray without consulting Jessica about the cost: they told her it's covered when it's not, despite Jessica explicitly saying she needed to know the price first because she has to pay a deductible. She then called her insurance company to ask about the price fo the x-ray, and they referred her to their website which turned up nothing. Next, she called the x-ray provider who told her that they won't know the cost until the claim is processed through insurance.

Needless to say, Jessica felt like the ball of a ping-pong tournament, having to go back and forth with NO ANSWER as to the cost of her x-ray.

"How is it possible that neither the insurance company nor the doctor's office hasn't a clue on what their contracted rate is?" -Capt. Kelley

Detective Steve then revealed that this isn't the only time a consumer has suffered from getting the go-around between the insurance company and medical provider.

Just recently, Steve had to get a couple of MRI's. His insurance company, United Healthcare, told him that his plan did not cover imaging, but that United had a contracted rate with certain offices that provided the service. Steve went to the doctor's office and received two MRI's.

After he paid the bill on-site, another bill came a few weeks after his first MRI: another $160. He paid it again. After his second MRI, he was charged over $300.

Realizing he's paid DOUBLE the price his insurance company assured him of for both MRI's, Steve called MULTIPLE TIMES spanning several weeks to finally learn that the doctor's office had in fact, gone against the contracted rate they agreed upon with the insurance company. The doctor's office then explained to Steve that they needed up to six weeks to issue him a refund...

When the six-week mark passed this weekend, Steve still hadn't received his refund. When he called for what must've felt like the hundreth time, the doctor's office said refunds require up to 120 days to process!

WHAT?! CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT ANYONE?!

Also featured in today's episode was our special guest Cynthia Lavin from the Southeast Better Business Bureau. She's the Director of Communications and Community Engagement. Last week when we reported on the runaway wedding photographer from Cape Coral, we also revealed that our research of April Mersinger Photography had turned up FIVE complaints filed on the BBB website.

A national brand that's been around for 100 years, the BBB not only takes complaints from consumers against businesses, but also offers businesses educational programs, networking opportunities and other events. Cynthia shared how businesses that are "ACCREDITED" with the BBB have to meet certain criteria to be considered. The BBB researches their contracts, website, employees, and more. Businesses do apply and pay a yearly fee to be accredited with the BBB. Consumers are able to both search for reliable service providers or report those who have performed shoddy work or behaved unethically (even if they are NOT accredited). This is important for other South Florida consumers to avoid bad apples!

And last but certainly not least, was a very zen interview with our very own Alice Saltzman, local yoga guru here in Southeast Florida! Detective Steve and Captain Kelley both take her "Royal Yoga" class at SOL Yoga studio's Fort Lauderdale location. While she teaches at other locations as well, Alice loves to teach royal yoga or what she calls "RAJA" yoga. Not your normal flow or vinyasa class, raja yoga is actually a mental practice, "the science of the mind".

"What I do in my class is teach a yin based posture sequence and what yin is science that has been around for a couple thousand years."

It's not about being fast or strong even—it's all about letting gravity do the work for you and rehydrating that connective tissue.

"We are holding poses for about 2-3 minutes on each side which is stretching the connective tissue, the webbing that surrounds our muscles, tendons and ligaments."

It's not just yoga—it's meditation.

The mental process Alice teaches in her classes is to focus on something that makes you happy, one particular thing, and then you try to figure out what it is that helps you quiet your mind. Alice regularly references scripture, ancient teachings, sutras and stories to help enhance the connection and peace you feel during the class.

You can find Alice here at SOL Yoga on Tuesday's and Thursday's at 7:00pm or on Wednesdays at 5:30pm.

Or you can find her at Zen Mind Space Friday's at 11 AM.

Workshop on the Yoga Sutras:

Saturday, March 14th from 2-4pm

She is also offering an 8-WEEK online class teaching yoga philosophy starting Monday night, March 16th.
